My Summer Skincare Routine

By Mira

In the summertime, I don’t like to wear a lot of makeup.  In the heat my makeup (particularly face) likes to slide off.  Also, in the summertime I love to swim so wearing a full face of makeup is not very smart because I have to take it off anyway and I want to enjoy my summer and not spend the time doing my makeup in the morning.  Because of this, in the summertime I like to have nice, glowing skin.  To achieve this I follow a light skincare routine.  Here it is!

Also, I have normal to oily skin.  I am prone to blemishes (not acne), but this skincare routine keeps my skin really clear!

When I get up I put in my contacts, then immediately go to my bathroom sink or take a shower.  Here I wash my face with my clean and clear morning burst cleanser.  I love this cleanser because it makes my face feel really clean and wakes me up with its fruity scent!  (Shhh… I’ve found that even though it says “Morning Burst” you can use it at night too!)  After I’ve done this I use my lush tea tree water as a toner.  This is fantastic because it works to calm any inflammation in my skin.  Then, I will apply my Clinique dramatically different moisturizing gel.  I absolutely love this because it keeps my skin moisturized without making it greasy.  Because it is a gel it applies very lightly and gives me a glow to my skin.  Tip: it seems counter-intuitive to use a moisturizer if you have oily skin, but it actually decreases your skins oil production because a good moisturizer will trick your skin into not producing oils, thinking it already has because your skin is moisturized!  Hope that made sense, but basically no matter what your skin type you should use a moisturizer!

This is all I do in the morning!

This is where my skincare routine gets a little more complex.  First I remove any makeup that I have worn throughout the day.  To do this I use sunflower oil.  Sunflower oil is light, natural oil that is wonderful at removing even waterproof makeup.  I was skeptical in trying this, thinking that because it is an oil it would break me out, but it does not.  It is extremely gentle and great for sensitive, young skin.  After this I will cleanse my skin with my Cetaphil cleanser.  I love this cleanser because it is so gentle and calms my skin.  I use my Clarisonic Mia to apply the cleanser.  Clarisonics are expensive, but honestly they are the key to keeping my skin clear and soft.  However, there are alternatives to the Clarisonic.  I know Olay makes a similar product.  I only use my Clarisonic at night, any more is too rough for my skin.  Tip:  when you first use your Clarisonic or other device your skin will break out like crazy (this is called purging), however after a while your skin will be the best it has ever been.  Pretty much what it does is all the blemishes or acne that could’ve formed is brought to the surface.  Once you combat that then your skin will be lovely. Then, I will spray my face with my lush toner again and follow up with a spot treatment on any blemishes I have.  I use the Kate Somerville Eradi-kate spot treatment.  I like this because it isn’t a harsh spot treatment, like a lot of drugstore brands are, being its main ingredient is sulfur.  However for a long time I used the clean and clear benzoyl peroxide treatment and loved that.

My night routine is extensive but once you have it down it only will take you five minutes and keeps your skin in fantastic shape.

Once a week

Once a week I do a face mask. I will boil some water in a basic pot.  Then I will steam my face while putting a towel over my face to trap the steam.  I do this for about ten minutes wash my face with warm water and apply a lush face mask.  I do this whole process to get out all the gunk that is trapped in my pores and open the up for the face mask to settle into.  I love lush face masks because they are effective, but gentle.  However, Queen Helene makes a Mint Julep face mask that is nice.  The catch with lush face masks is even though they are affordable they only last three weeks because they contain no preservatives so they spoil.

Wash my makeup brushes!  Every week I wash my makeup brushes because the makeup brushes that you use on your face (foundation brush, blush, powder) trap acne forming bacteria.  Wash them with shampoo and leave them out to dry.  When you wake up, you will have clean makeup brushes!

If you have blemishes, that doesn’t mean you have acne.  Acne is large blemishes covering all areas of your face.  If you have a few blemishes on your forehead, cheeks, or nose then you don’t need to consider yourself having acne.  So stay away from cleansers and skincare product that say acne in the title.  Those are typically very harsh chemical cleansers that if you are using for a skincare concern you don’t have can end up breaking you out even more.  However, if you do have acne, then use those products or see a dermatologist. 🙂

Non-comegenic!  When searching for new skincare always remember this term.  Non-comedenic means “Won’t clog pores”.  This is great because it pretty much means that you won’t break out.  It’s a way for the skincare company to sound fancy and trustworthy.  I think a lot of teenagers love products that say “Oil-free”, but in reality oils are good for your skin.  They can actually even help against breakouts.  However, if a product does not say non-comedogenic or oil-free then be cautious.  Breakouts form when oils are trapped (clogged) in your skin, so that combination tends to be bad.

Skincare definitely is an investment.  I do have a lot of higher end products, but in reality all you need is a good moisturizer, cleanser, and spot treatment. This is what all these three-step systems consist of and the combination is extremely effective.  This is my skincare routine, but everyone has different skin.  This works for my skin, so if you want to purchase or sample (great way to try out these skincare products is to go to a department store, like Nordstrom, and ask a worker at a counter for a sample) these products consider your skin type before you try them out.  If you do have my skin type though, I would recommend these products. 🙂 Have a beautiful day,

(P.S. – I am not a dermatologist.  Before you try any of these products I advise seeing a skincare expert- I am just a teenage girl and this works for me 🙂 )

Part 2: Colored Jeans

Colored jeans are a huge trend this spring and summer.  We can see these practical accessories on the runway, celebrities, and on the street.  The right pair can make an outfit fun and summery.   In this post I will give you my tips and tricks on how to style and find your perfect pair of colored jeans!

1. Less is More

My first tip would be to think of your jeans as your main accessory.  You don’t need a bunch of jewelry to make this piece fashionable.  The right watch or necklace is really all that you need in order to look cute and be comfy.

2. Roll it up!

Next,  cuff them!  Folding the base of your jean will make this bold statement much more casual and summer appropriate.

3. Up Top

Don’t just worry about the jeans themselves.  The right shirt will make your jeans pop and give you the look you are going for!  Try a bright shirt in a different color if you are trying your hand at the color blocking trend, a neutral top, or a patterned top with a color scheme that ties in with your pants.  DON’T: wear the same color shirt as your jeans.  You will look like a walking crayon.

4.  Find the right color!  I love coral, but it just doesn’t look good on my skin tone, so when I get a pair of colored jeans I want a light aqua color pair.  Meanwhile, Fiona totally pulls off this coral pair!

Here, I show how I would style colored jeans!  I love how fun colored jeans are, but you can also make them very casual!  This polyvore that I made shows you how you can style one pair of colored jeans so many different ways!

I love how in this video, Carly Cristman styles colored jeans!  All of her suggestions I totally agree with.  In general she has amazing style.

So that is how I would style colored jeans.  Here I give some links to my favorite jeans in a variety of price ranges.

This is the pair Fiona is wearing in the photo!  It comes in a ton of colors and is not too expensive:

This pair from jcrew is definitely expensive, but if you do have the money and would like to invest in a quality pair these are adorable:

If you are looking for a cute, inexpensive pair that will get you through the season then I love this pair from forever21.  I like all the colors, but the yellow I am a little iffy on.   However, I do this it could work with the right accessories and top!

A Blazing Summer

Hey Girlies!  It’s Mira here.  I’m sure all of you are aware of how popular blazers were this past winter season.  Who says you can’t transition those investments into the summer!  Here are some quick tips on how to pull any blazer into summer as well as some cute blazers I’ve found for reasonable prices (it’s not too late to get your hands on one.  They are a great functional way to dress up any outfit!)

1.  Pair with shorts:

Blazers will give a polished vibe to a casual outfit.  Try pairing them with cut-off or even (if you’re feeling trendy) a pair of lace shorts! This is a great outfit to rock on a cooler summer day because the blazer will keep you warm, but you won’t suffocate under a pair of sweaty jeans and you can show off your tanned legs!

2. Girly meets sophisticated

Pair it with a girly dress to make your whimsical personality more serious.

3. Pump it up

For a casual job interview or dinner with friends, try pairing your favorite pair of dark-wash skinnies with a white shirt and your blazer of choice.  Boooorrrringggg, right?  “Pump” your outfit up with a pair of bright or patterned high-heels.  This is a great way to show off your fun personality and still rock the trendiest of shoes.  For an added pop, wear a statement necklace in a contrasting color from the shoes (if the shoes are one bright color) or pick up on your favorite color in your patterned pumps!

4. Don’t horse around!

On a windy summer day or out shopping with your friends in an air conditioned mall, stay fashionable by pairing (again) a pair of skinnies with your blazer.  Finish off this look by adding a pair of riding  boots for that equestrian vibe

My favorite blazers:

Classic:  here are some classic blazers, in many price ranges, that can be paired with pretty much everything and will never go out of style!

This blazer from forever21 is a nice classic cut and cheap price. In the navy it is very figure flattering.  I am also very impressed that for such an affordable price, it has a very cute flare in the back that makes it unique and fashionable.

This blazer is from Nordstroms. It comes in many colors, but for this section (classic) I would stick to black. It is more expensive than the one for forever21, but I am a strong believer in Nordstroms’ quality.  If you are planning on getting a lot of wear out of this blazer then go for Nordstroms.  This blazer is a classic piece that will stay in your wardrobe until you outgrow it.  However, the forever21 blazer is much more affordable and it is very classic.  On this blazer, I reallllly like the 3/4 sleeves because that makes it a lot more wearable, feminine and casual!

I think this blazer is absolutely lovely.   It looks super feminine and cute.  However, considering it is H&M it is still pretty expensive.  For the quality I feel that the Nordstroms one is still cuter and more timeless, but if this is your maximum price I would go with this.

This one is from forever21.  It is very simple, but I think that is why I love it so much.  It is a very classic black blazer.  Its cropped style makes it look much less masculine!

Trendy:  These are the blazers that may come and go, but can make any outfit fashion-forward and finished.

This blazer is my obsession.  I need it.  For such a bold color (I like the pink) it is very versatile.  I love the way it is styled in the picture but can also imagine it with a turquoise sundress.  This blazer is its own accessory and is perfect for a fun summer look!

If you don’t want to fork that much money out on that bright blazer, I found this similar one at forever21.  However they don’t have the pink color (which is the color I like), but they have a beautiful solid blue.  If you are interested in the blue Nordstroms one then I may consider this:

This forever21 blazer is the most fun thing ever!  There is a very similar one from Nordstroms, but I prefer this one because of the price.  This is not a blazer that you can wear every day, but it is still really cute and fashionable.

Nordstroms one:

This is another blazer from Nordstroms, I am not trying to promote them, but currently I feel they have the cutest blazers I have seen! This jean one is perfect for a day at the beach or getting ice cream.  It follows the same cut as a blazer but the material is what sets it apart.  It looks extremely relaxed, while still staying classic.  I also LOVE the gathered shoulders.  This makes its bold print much more wearable!

Here is a similar one I found at forever21, though in this case I do prefer the cut and gathered shoulders in the Nordstroms one:

I love this blazer from forever21!  It is so girly and cute!  I would wear this with cut-off denim shorts to make it more casual!

My last blazer is this one from Nordstroms!  It is very preppy and boarding school inspired.  I love the piping and contrast.  I feel like this could be really dressed up or down.  Look for yourself!

Post coming soon!

Hey all my lovely girlies!  Don’t worry a post is coming tomorrow!  We are taking a little time to ensure that we have the best posts to come.  Please stay tuned and beautiful!
